TAKE-OFF POINT: Baginton, Coventry
CRASH LOCATION: Long Marston, Warwickshire.
AIRCRAFT TYPE & SERIAL: Avro Lancaster Mk I NG435
CREW FATALITIES: Sqn Ldr R.M. Mace RCAF (Armstrong Whitworth Test Pilot) and Mr Morgan ( Armstrong Whitworth Flight Engineer).
PURPOSE OF TEST FLIGHT: Production test flight.
ACCIDENT DETAIL: Aircraft was seen to go into a steepening dive from 12,000 feet before it dived almos vertically into the ground.

The digger arrives at Long Marston. The site was subject to a recovery during the 1960s by a local farmer and local legend stated one engine was out of reach for the equipment and never recoveried.

A Forster magnetometer used to located the deeply buried Merlin.

The merlin crank shaft was found buried at 12 feet. It would appear that the engine was under power when striking the ground as it was shattered into hundreds of pieces.
