The bodies of two Hampden crew
members were laid to rest with full military honours at Bergen,
Holland, on 7 May 2008; they are Sergeant Stanley Mullenger
and Sergeant John Kehoe.
Hampden P1206 of 49 Squadron was shot down on 8 November
1941 during an intruder sortie to the Bocholt area of northern
Germany.
The aircraft was attacked over the Dutch coast by a German
night fighter and crashed shortly after 2100 hours into farmland
along the Dorfstrasse of Berkhout in the neighbourhood of
Hoorn.
The crew members were:
Warrant Officer Christopher Saunders DFM - killed
Sergeant James D'Arcy - killed
Sergeant Stanley Mullenger - missing
Sergeant John Kehoe – missing
The excavation was carried out by the Dutch Air Force and
Army in September 2007 and was sponsored by the local council.
Sgt Mullenger and Sgt Kehoe's remains have been recovered
and the two airmen were to be laid to rest with full military
honours at the General Cemetery in Bergen on Wednesday 7 May
2008.
